Need to renew your still valid government issued I.D.? Sure thing, come on in! Btw, that valid government issued ID that we required you to prove your legal status in order to get, and is valid legal status ID for literally everyone else...isn’t a valid ID to prove your legal status, be sure to bring a birth certificate.*

*no that notarized thing you have that says “birth certificate” from the department of health...it doesn’t count for, uh, reasons.

If you want you can use a passport, but only if its not expired. You can get a new passport by using your driver’s license and an expired passport if you’d like...

Damn. When renewed my ID picture in AZ I just showed up with my old ID. Those Utahns are really afraid of people taking ther jerbs.

When I got my license in TX, it took three tries, because the first two (days apart), their system for checking passports was down (third time I was smart enough to go to another location). I feel like if the computer isn’t working, they should just be able to make a copy of the passport page for their records and go with it. That’s obviously what happened before they were tied into the system. If it is so important to check against the computer, then maybe make sure that system has high uptime.

I don’t have the correct documents to renew my passport because apparently my birth certificate isn’t valid. I can only get a valid birth certificate at the hospital I was born in—in person—but I need a passport. State issued driver’s license is apparently worth zero as a form of identification in this situation.

It’s legitimately easier—and sometimes cheaper—to get fake documents than to deal with the government. The best part? My authentic state-issued ID is absolutely riddled with errors and inaccuracies which occasionally cause issues (I gave up trying to get it changed) whereas my I-was-a-stupid-highschooler fake ID had perfect info and was universally accepted without question.

Imagine if you lost your original birth certificate, and the hospital that issued it lost its records or no longer exists.

You would be screwed.

Your standing as a citizen and human being in many parts of the world, can often be made or broken based on a single piece of paper .

So does your government not trust you or does it not trust itself?

A DMV told my mom, who has a furriner accent, that her US passport doesn’t prove her citizenship. She offered a US naturalization certificate. Nope, they said. That doesn’t prove it either. Ok, what do they want to see?

A credit card.

She showed them a credit card, and that, to them, proved her citizenship.

Wow, if it were only this easy everywhere!

(Also, despite them having an official policy of verifying everyone’s immigration status, that same DMV never asked me for proof of anything, presumably because I don’t talk like a furriner.)

Did your passport expire?

That’s ridiculous. You can get a CC without being a citizen... All you need is a number that allows them to pull a credit report.

A passport is absolute proof of citizenship. That’s why it is all you need for an I-9, for example.

The potential to be LITERALLY NOBODY, a nonexistent person despite having a body, an identity-less human.

How’s that for a horror movie?

I had to renew my license this past summer, I knew I was going to have to prove my address so I grab the registration for my truck and Lincoln.

“Sorry Sir, those won’t work, we need something from your mail that proves your address.”

“Yaaa but, these documents mailed to me by the state of IL have my name and address on them.”

“Not good enough. Sir”

Came home grabbed some junk mail out of the mailbox and went back. They accepted it.

I really want to try to get a license in the name of past tenants of our house whose junk mail we still get.

Is this for that whole “real ID act”? MI got an exemption until 2020 now, so I’ll worry about it when I need to renew my license.

That’s why this is a funny story. (Actually, you don’t need an SSN to have a credit card. There are secured cards that don’t require an SSN. And of course CCs are issued outside the US too.)

This reminds me that I have to get my license renewed over Spring Break next week. I’ve actually never had any problems during the times I’ve visited the PA DMV. Even when the lady behind the counter had to come outside to check the odometer on my just bought NA Miata.

Or that you could get a card from, say, Citibank Mexico.

True. They’re just stupid. But every DMV is. Really, I feel basically every government agency involved in identification is, except possibly the Department of State (they just have demand spikes and relatively slow turnaround times).

The hospital I was born in still exists as a building, but it’s basically just a drug den now. I thought I had to go through the state to get my BC if I ever lost it, but now you’ve got me concerned.

I’m assuming it’s because of the Real ID thing. I just got a notice in the mail with similar requirements for my state. Usually you’d just fill out the renewal form, pay, and get your picture taken.

Honestly I do not even know where my birth certificate is. Likely at my parents house, which I have not lived in for the past 14 years.
